Stay or Go, Day 16

After my hill training I went to a neighborhood in Tavares, a town just north of Howey-in-the-Hills, to pop in on a few open houses. The prices were right, so I wanted to get a feel for the neighborhood. It was a 55+ neighborhood, which is what almost all are around here. To sum it up, no way. This trip did not win any points for the "stay" category.

Reason to stay: cycling with El (but how long will that last, she has 12 years on me so I really need to find a cycling friend my age or younger if I want to use this as an excuse to stay).

Reason to go: the heat and humidity (we have to risk heat stroke for more than half the year).

Lake Harris at 7am and it was already uncomfortably hot!

Yes, I full week in the park!! I didn't actually stay in the park, so it was more like a full week in Pigeon Forge with the opportunity to visit the park every day. Unfortunately, it was rainy a few of the days so I stayed at the cabin one day and went to the aquarium another day. Other than that, I did visit the park every day. Jenn joined me on the day after Thanksgiving and we explored the Cades Cove section of the park. Here is the cabin I rented for the week. It was just a 10-minute drive from Pigeon Forge and about a 30-minute drive from the park. It was a scary drive up a steep road and my car couldn't even make it up the driveway. Well, it would have made it up the driveway if they had sweep for me, but there was a thick blanket of wet leaves and halfway up the tires lost traction. Cycling in the Nonahood, Oct 8

I haven't done too much to blog about these last few weeks. I did get out on my bike a few times around Lake Nona. I love the open fields with cows, but know this will end in the not too distant future. They already have plans to build a giant shopping mall with a Target and other chain stores and restaurants, plus the housing developments are out of control. I have to remind myself to enjoy the open spaces while they last and take solace in knowing that I will not be retiring here. I'm longing for the country and cooler temperatures. I think it hits me the hardest in October because I love fall with the changing leaves and its promise of winter and the holidays soon to come. Hard to get into the spirit in Florida when your sipping a pumpkin spiced ICED latte because its still in the 90's and we are considering ourselves lucky if we get a morning that starts out below 80.

FFW Horrible Hundred, Nov 20

 It was a truly horrible day for the FFW Horrible Hundred (cold and rainy). Thankfully, I was at the SAG stop putting pickles in little paper cups rather than riding my bike!! It was a fun weekend none-the-less. My fellow volunteers were nice and the riders coming through were terrific and very appreciative of our offerings. One of these years I'll have to ride the hills, but maybe not 100 miles! Riders enjoying their pickle juice (and other snacks)!
