Sight Seeing in Cape Cod, Jun 9

I took one extra day on my work trip to get in some sightseeing and get another stamp for my National Parks passport book. Technically, Cape Cod is a National Seashore, not Park, but I got the stamp anyway. The weather was atrocious while I was out there and I suspect that being wet and cold for half the day is what brought on the cold, but no way will I let a little rain stop me!

First stop on my tour was all the way to the tip, Provincetown (better known as P-town) and to a Portuguese bakery. I thought it was just funny they had a Portuguese bakery since I would be in Portugal in one more week.

Of course I had to try something! I selected the Bolas de Berlin (donut filled for Boston cream). The description said it was a Portuguese favorite. We'll see if there is such a thing when I actually get over there.

Foggy morning on the water.

Harbor towns are awesome. Love the atmosphere. Made me wonder how people survive the winters here... I was cold and this was June!!!

Next stop was the Cape Cod National Seashore and a quest for lighthouses. I found a few. Funny, they were much shorter than the Florida lighthouses. I guess this is because they are placed on land that is at a higher elevation, where in Florida all land is only a few feet above sea level.

The potato chip bag light house 😄

Next stop was Chatham, a super cute little town. I think if I were to return to Cape Cod for a real vacation, I would stay here. I could spend hours watching the harbor seals.

At first I thought there was a row of rocks on the far side of the harbor and a few seals in the water. Then I realized they were all seals! Tons of them!!!

What could top watching seals? Nothing, but the tour of Cape Cod was not finished. Next I went to a Lavender farm. I book I bought really talked this place up, so I had high expectations. The book didn't mention that you had to drive down a very narrow dirt path to get there. I was sure my little rental Toyota with the "check engine" light on would not make it out. Oh well, all in the name of an adventure.

Lavender from afar is not very impressive.
It looked a little better up close.
But only truly beautiful with an extreme close up. How many things can you say that about? 😄

That concluded my world wind tour of Cape Cod. I finished the day with a walk on the beach back at the cottages then dinner at Skippers across the street. Of course I had a bowl of New England Clam Chowder. Delicious!!
The sky finally cleared up by the end of the day. It was still windy and chilly, but at least it dried up a bit.

The beaches here are so different than Florida. First off, there are no high rise condos or resorts, only these little cottage style houses. I didn't see anything over three stories high on the entire island. There also were no fast food chain restaurants, all mom and pop places. Really cool place and a nice change for a few days.
